Our Story

Raised in the city housing projects of New York, a young Jerry dreamed of the day he could help his family move into a home of their very own.  From the age of 10 he would work any job a young boy could to earn some spare change.  He’d sweep floors and help people load groceries into their cars.  He worked hard in school, math and science being his favorite subjects, and he continued to pray, hope, and dream.

After years of hard work, one day that dream was fulfilled.  The family had worked together and they were able to buy a place they could call their own!  But of course, the drive and determination didn’t stop there.

For some time, Jerry and his older brother Richard had been working for a Dairy Queen.  In 1975 they were able to purchase the business from the owner and embark on a new adventure.  As time went on and they learned their customers’ preferences, the store began to change over and offer a more tropical selection.  In 1979 they officially became Taste The Tropics (USA).

Sadly, Richard passed away in 1990 and though he is so very missed, Jerry has worked tirelessly to carry on his legacy.  You see, for Jerry the store has always been more than just a business, it’s been a ministry and he’s made it his mission to serve the community not only with delicious ice cream but with kindness and words of encouragement as well, for all who walk through its doors.

We are humbled to say that we have been able to serve the community for over 40 years and we count that as one of our greatest blessings.  We know it’s only by the grace of God and the support from our customers that we are able to continue on.  We are very thankful for all of our customers, who come from all walks of life, and some of whom have been eating our ice cream since they were little kids!  We will continue to work hard to serve you the best tropical ice cream and novelties from our hands to yours.
